Why AI search engines pick some content and ignore the rest
AI answer engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google SGE don't index content the way traditional search does. They look for structured, authoritative, direct answers embedded in content that's well-organized and clearly attributed.
After optimizing content for over a dozen B2B clients in 2025-2026, I've identified five patterns that consistently get cited. These aren't theoretical. They're reverse-engineered from real citations.
Pattern 1: Lead with a direct answer
AI engines extract the first clear answer to a query. If your content buries the answer in paragraph four, you lose. Put the answer in the first 2-3 sentences, then expand below.
Pattern 2: Use structured headers as questions
Frame your H2s and H3s as the exact questions your audience asks. AI engines match user queries to headers. 'What is lead scoring' as an H2 will outperform 'Our approach to scoring' every time.
Pattern 3: Include comparison tables
AI engines love structured data. Tables that compare options (Fractional CMO vs. Agency, HubSpot vs. Salesforce) are cited at 3-4x the rate of prose paragraphs making the same comparison.
Pattern 4: Cite real numbers with attribution
Specific numbers with sources get cited. 'Companies that implement lead scoring see a 77% increase in lead gen ROI (Marketo)' is citable. 'Lead scoring improves results significantly' is not.
Pattern 5: Author attribution and credentials
AI engines weigh author authority. Include a clear author byline with credentials. Content by 'Shani Wolf, 15-year B2B marketing operator and Amplemarket Advisor' ranks higher than anonymous blog posts.
The AEO checklist
- Direct answer in first 3 sentences
- H2s framed as questions
- At least one comparison table per article
- 3+ specific statistics with sources
- Author byline with credentials
- FAQ section at the bottom with schema markup
